Fonsalette, Cotes du Rhone Rouge Size:12x750mlThis was the red wine we chose from the wine list in Fontjoncouse to follow the Leroy 2000 Bourgogne Blanc which, if anything, was even less evolved than this rich red, the most famous wine of its appellation. The 2001 vintage was of course very successful in the southern Rhne and this was luscious and spicy but the tannins were completely resolved and the fruity impact was in retreat. Nothing heavy or grating. At 187, it was certainly not given away

There is excellent richness to the full-bodied

as Nicolas Catena was the true pioneer and is still the most important wine personality in Argentina

but pleasant in a one-dimensional

Less autolytic in style than the 2004

dry and impeccably well-balanced finale

plum and spicy oak

The palate impression is one of generosity

with lots of red currant

(planted in 1985)

Reminiscent of the 1989

there’s no harm in checking on it now
